Unlucky number 16

Since Sunday Glen Riddle has received around 2.6" of rain.  Though it washes out our bunkers and leaves the course too soft to mow we welcome the moisture.  It had been a few weeks since our last significant rainfall, and the course has benefited from it.  Heavy rain almost acts like a "hard reset", allowing the course to get back to square 1 in terms of color and h2o uniformity.

Right now I'd give anything to avoid any more rainfall until late next week.  War Admiral is hosting the Maryland Woman's Open on Monday the fourth and Tuesday the fifth.  Now it's great to host a tournament, I really get geared up for these things.  However, because of the rain we haven't mowed anything but green since Sunday and with this little gem of a storm Tropical Depression 16, it's likely we will struggle to get the entire course mowed by Monday.  Come hell or high water everything will be ready by Monday, but we continue to get pushed back by the otherwise wonderful rain.

In times like these we prepare by sending the crew home during the week to save up man hours for the weekend.  It's likely you'll see us mowing grass all day Saturday and Sunday.  I'm really hoping we don't get completely washed out Thursday, but should the rain come hard, we'll adapt and get the job done.

Situations like this are sometimes common to our industry.  When you take care of a living, breathing golf course sometimes you don't work normal office hours.  Much like nursing, you have to be on call to respond to the immediate needs of the golf course.  While the crazy hours often cause my family some added stress, I love what I do.  Being able to deliver quality conditions to players is my motivation.  It's a passion shared my many in the industry.
